A top executive invited his internal coach — "Ingo," who, it turned out, had been in one of my leadership programs seven years earlier — to join our third session. Ingo opened with a smile: "Remind me again… why are we doing this?"

I loved it. Starting with Why is grounding and brave. I turned to my coachee, who laughed: "I knew you'd ask me that. I don't know."

So I offered: life is short, and we don't know how many years we have. Why are we doing this? To have a good life — and to help others have a good life too. This session, this hour, is for exactly that. "I'm 100% on your side. Committed. With the right questions. Sometimes critical. But always with unconditional love and zero judgment."

Why are you doing this — working, striving, showing up? And if you take the mask off, how are you really doing?
